The Zelaije, Algiers earthenware –

(en) The Zelaije, Algiers earthenware

The Othoman period in Algeria adorned its palaces, particularly those of Algiers, with prodigious quantities of earthenware tiles of various origins and countries. These tiles have a particular name in Arabic, "Zelaije" which differs slightly from "Zelije", a term referring to mosaics of Andalusian inspiration found in Morocco and western Algeria. This term is still found in a famous popular Algiers adage, used to speak of a sumptuous house, which says "Dar, zelaije wa rkham", which means "A house made of marble and Zelaije", architectural elements which represented at the era a high level of refinement, richness and preciousness. This is how we find in these villas and palaces Hispanic tiles from Barcelona, Valencia, Tunisian tiles, but also Italian from Naples and even Dutch called “De Delft or Bleu de Delft” The tradition continues today with Algerian craftsmen who reproduce these tiles identically to now adorn the new homes of individuals who love the history of Algeria.
