Project nominated for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture 2010.
“La Casa de la Mujer” (“The Women’s House” in Spanich) is a multipurpose humanitarian center built in the desert area of Rabouni, in Tindouf, where Sahrawi refugees live, as part of an international cooperation initiative. It is intended for the National Union of Sahrawi Women and aims to provide training, particularly in computing. The building was constructed by local craftsmen under the direction of architect Guido Moretti and inaugurated on March 8, 2007.
The structure is organized around a simple square measuring 15 meters on each side, crossed by a central corridor and covered by a barrel vault. It comprises four rooms, complemented by two small internal courtyards accessible from these spaces and open to the outside.
The building is made from local materials, primarily adobe bricks, using local labor and traditional construction techniques. The 40 cm thick walls, along with the domes and barrel vault, provide effective thermal insulation. Guillotine windows fitted with brick latticework protect against sun and wind while promoting natural ventilation.
